Dept. of Transportation (DOT) Shipping Test Protocols:

A liquid is considered to be corrosive if its corrosion rate exceeds 6.25 mmpy on Steel (SAE 1020 carbon steel) or Aluminum (7075-Y6) at a test temperature of 55C. ENVIROGEN has a corrosion rate of 0.64 mmpy on Mild Steel, and >6.25 mmpy on aluminum. Conclusion: Although ENVIROGEN has a corrosion rate of >6.25 mmpy on aluminum, it is still classified as a Non-Regulated material with regards to shipping over the rate. This is based on an exemption in the DOT protocols, Section 173.154 Exceptions for Class 8 (corrosive materials), Item (d) Materials corrosive to aluminium and steel only. Note: Unlike the original formula, our latest formulation with Cytagen allows for cleaning sensitive metals surfaces that were not originally suited to cleaning with the original formula.


A modified Draize method was used as described in OECD Guidelines for the Testing of Chemicals, Sec.404, Paris 1981 (revised 1992). This study complies with the requirements of OECD Principles of GLP, Annex, Paris 1981, revised as of July 1992. ENVIROGEN received a Primary Irritation Score of 2.1±0.9 and is classified as a “Mild Skin Irritant”. ENVIROGEN Active was also tested for skin irritancy in a formulated cleaner containing 20% Active, amphoteric and 75% water. This formulation received a Primary Irritation Score of1.2±0.7 and is classified as a “Very Mild Skin Irritant”.


ENVIROGEN was found NOT TO BE MUTAGENIC when tested by the Ames Assay, (OECD Guidelines for Testing of Chemicals, Sec. 471)



The COD is 3500 mg/L. The test method used was Hach’s Reactor Digestion Method for Waste Water and Sea Water. The Hach Reactor Digestion Method is a semi-macro adaptation of the Standard Methods. (For comparison, organic acids, surfactants, and glycol ethers will typically have CODs between 1,000,000 – 2,000,000 mg/L. THE BOD IS 500 mg/L after 5 days and 600 mg/L at 10 days. The test method used was Part 507 Oxygen Demand (Biochemical) of the Standard Methods for Examination of Water and Wastewater, 1985, 16th Edition.

Food/Beverage Facilities and Waste Disposal Regulations

The standard for discharging waste into the sewage system is a pH level in the range of 5.5 to 9.5, depending upon the municipality. Each municipality has its own pH requirement standards.

Before any acid waste can be released into the sewage system it must be neutralized to meet the local standards. If the waste has a pH of less than 5.5, caustics have to be added to bring the pH up to meet the disposal requirements. Conversely, if the pH is higher than 9.5 then an acid must be added to bring the pH down to acceptable levels. In dealing with the disposal of toxic waste, acid is not the major issue. BOD (Biological Oxygen Demand) is. A very low BOD level is good because it does not place such a high load on the sewage treatment.

Waste material contains several difference substances aside from the soil being cleaned – cleaners, acids, phosphates, silicates, solvents, butyl for example. All waste materials have their own pH and BOD levels that can further complicate the disposal procedure. Again, surcharges are levied for hard to dispose of waste.

ENVIROGEN makes waste disposal easy.

ENVIROGEN makes it very easy to control the pH in waste materials. Compared to strong acids, a very small amount of caustic is required to bring ENVIROGEN up to regulation standards. For example, phosphoric and muriatic acids (muriatic is 32% hydrochloric acid and is the highest level of concentration available) are harder to neutralize than ENVIROGEN. This is because they are strong, corrosive acids and therefore need more caustics to neutralize. Of even greater concern is the danger of mixing acids with caustic because this can cause a violent reaction.
